b) Letter to Editor with transcript of Proposal, September 27, 2021

At the Sept. 20 School Board meeting I presented a proposal to expand the Transylvania school system excellence by using state of the art technical systems.

Based on last year’s experience with online teaching, I propose that online cameras be installed in every classroom so that parents and interested citizens can observe from their homes what goes on in classrooms.

There are, of course, technical details to be worked out. Use of Facebook at a previous board meeting, streaming at this meeting and Wi-Fi home video teaching during the past year show this is technically feasible.

The benefits:

Parents can follow the lessons being taught their children. Teachers can show off their knowledge and teaching skills. Students can show off their learning abilities in a classroom situation.

Administrators can more realistically evaluate and mentor their teachers.

Cameras will protect teachers and students from disruptive acts or violence in the classroom. Teachers and students will be protected from intruders and disruptions.

Students will be on their best behavior because their parents may be watching.

Parents will learn what is being taught their children and be better able to assist them with their home studies.

Has anyone tried to assist their children in the new math? I would like to tutor at the Boys & Girls Club. I cannot. I would be teaching methods that would probably be different from what is now being taught.

Teachers can record their lessons and send them to absent students at a later time.

The drawbacks:

Technical details will have to be worked out.

There will be learning curves for teachers, students, and parents. Costs should be minimal given the structure already in place and available grants.

I am sure that the superintendent and his staff have the knowledge and experience to implement this proposal. There are probably many citizens who would be willing to help with this project.

Conclusion:

The benefits for students, parents, teachers, administrators, and taxpayers will outweigh any drawbacks to this proposal.
